Agrimony: Used as hepatic, mild astringent, homeostatic, vulnerary, cholagogue (increases flow of bile eg artichoke, garlic). Know as a bitter tonic and helps to promote the assimilation of food.
Uses: for a weak stomach, indigestion, sluggish liver, gall bladder disorders, diarrhoea and to promote the flow of gastric juices.
Cape Aloe: Perhaps the best known laxative of history. Stimulates peristalsis and softens the stool.
Used in chronic constipation, with carminatives to prevent griping. Also a stomach & liver tonic as well as a blood cleanser.
Alfalfa: Contains 8 essential enzymes which help to digest foods. Due to very deep roots, it yields 10 times more mineral value than average grains. Relieves constipation by gently activating peristalsis of the bowels.
Cascara Sagrada: Used as a laxative to treat constipation. Described as one of the most gentle but effective stimulating laxatives, able to produce a bowel movement without undue griping, especially if combined with carminatives. Also a stool softener.
It is a bitter tonic which helps to stimulates digestive secretions of the liver, gallbladder, stomach & pancreas.

Cayenne: Regarded by herbalists as the purest and safest stimulant known. Opens up every tissue in the body to increase flow of blood. Also used in poor digestion and to increase gastrointestinal secretions. Acts as an antispasmodic for relief of pain and a carminative.
Garlic: Has many beneficial properties such as anti-bacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-blood- clotting, cholesterol-lowering, triglyceride-loweting, and blood pressure lowering. It has been used to treat dysentery, typhoid, cholera, bacterial food poisoning and worms. It helps to heal the bowel with it’s anti-bacterial actions. Used as a cholagogue, to stimulate bile and also has anti-spasmodic and anti-dyspeptic properties.
Ginger: Alleviates occasional gas, bloating & nausea. Known as a ‘hot bitter’ herb which promotes gastric acidity and aids in digestion. Used for many stomach conditions as has anti-inflammatory, carminative, antispasmodic, expectorant (increases bronchial mucous), vasodilator and circulatory stimulant (not as sharp as Cayenne). Used for flatulence, to promote gastric secretions and in achlorhydria (absence or reduction of hydrochloric acid in stomach juices).
Senna Pods: Contains anthraquinones and specifically used in constipation due to it’s action as a stimulant laxative. Combined with ginger to prevent griping. Suitable for use in cases of gall bladder disorders.
Wild Yam: Has the capacity to relax smooth muscle and to treat cramps and the pains of irritable bowel syndrome. Added to herbal formulas for the treatment of the liver since it helps to counteract liver and gallbladder spasms sometimes caused by other herbs.
Used to prevent or alleviate stomach & muscle cramps. To promote bile flow and aid liver function Very effective in colicky cramps.
