Whatever your age, the goal should be to have a diet that provides your body with the right ‘fuel’ for health and vitality on a daily basis, including everything from a strong immune system and high energy levels, to digestive health and a low toxic load. As such, a key habit to encourage from a young age includes eating (preferably organic) fruit, in preference to sweets and fatty, sugary snacks or other ‘fast foods’ packed with artificial flavourings, colourings, additives and preservatives etc.

As much as two-thirds of the average calorie intake consists of fat, sugar and refined flour. The calories in sugar are called ‘empty’ because they provide no nutrients, and those are often hidden in processed foods and snacks. If a quarter of your diet by weight, and two-thirds by calories, consists of such nutrient-poor foods, there is little room left to get the required levels of essential nutrients on a daily basis.

What’s more, the greater the use of artificial substances in foods, the harder it is for the body to recognise, absorb and utilise the nutrients from within them; not to mention the toxic load that they can create over time. For example, wheat has 25 nutrients removed in the refining process that turns it into white flour, yet only 4 (iron, vitamins B1, B2 and B3) are replaced. On average, 87% of the esential minerals zinc, chromium and manganese is lost. Processed, meats, like hamburgers and sausages are no better: the use of inferiour, non-organic, meat high in fat lowers the nutrient content.

By contrast, whole foods, such as fruit, vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes, are naturally packed with antioxidants, dietary fibre, vitamins, minerals and phyto-nutrients that are essential for good health. However, processing of even these healthy foods can leave them depleted of nutrients. What’s more, fruit and vegetables are only as good as the soil in which they are grown. Minerals pass from the soil to the plant and, in turn, help the plant to grow and produce vitamins. Unfortunately, modern farming relies on artificial fertilisers and pesticides, which rob the soil of nutrients and does not replace them.

For this reason, along with the amount of time that food is stored, there is a staggering variation in the nutrient content of fruit and vegetables. For instance, an orange may provide anything from 180mg of vitamin C to nothing at all, with the average being around 60mg! Therefore, while it is great to pack your diet with fruit and vegetables, it is important to remember that quality is just as important as quantity.

By opting for organic produce wherever possible, you are ensuring that your food is not polluted with unwanted chemicals and you are receiving maximum nutritional benefit from it. In a form that is as close to natural as possible (‘food form’ or ‘food state’), the body is more easily able to recognise and use the nutrients available.

Add 1 or 2 heaped teaspoons (5g or 10g) to 50ml (1/4 glass full) water or juice. Stir and wait until the organic fruit powder disintegrates.
